Shifting Tension. Oil-paint, charcoal, watercolour, oil pastel, sandpaper and thread on stretched canvas. 2020. 10.5 x 24 x 2cm.
Like much of my work, the original inspiration for this painting was drawn from my environment. Shapes and forms derived from my local landscape were marked in before being worked over, cut into and nearly obliterated by mark-making on top. The result is a vivid, textured experiment with the formal conventions of painting, in which the traditional structure of the rectangular canvas form is collapsed by my use of angled wood, and by my inclusion of part of the stretcher bar within the painting.
